Since the word “selfie” was added to the dictionary in 2013, the selfie craze has only been increasing. According to Google, there were more than 24 billion selfies uploaded to their photo app in 2015. Everyone from celebrities to politicians is obsessed with taking snapshots of themselves every day.

Family dentist Dr. Blagoev decided to use this new cultural phenomenon to help hungry families. If people enjoy taking photos of themselves for fun, they will be even more excited to do it for a charitable cause.

When asked why she decided to donate a meal on behalf of each person who takes a selfie, Dr Blagoev explained, “It is a growing problem. Food demands at the local food pantries have increased and yet food donations have decreased. Hungry families and children need help all year round and we all can help them together.”

She thought of this idea after reading about the rising selfie phenomenon. “I take selfies with my family. I thought why not make this a fun event where we could share our smiles, and at the same time make a family in need smile too?”

Dr. Blagoev is encouraging everyone to participate in the selfie program to help the local community. She called this the “Share a Smile, Make a Smile” program.

Dr Blagoev’s dental office has been providing cosmetic and family dental services to the local residents in Parlin, Sayreville, and Old Bridge Township for over 20 years. With numerous food drives, free dental days, and other social events, Dr. Blagoev has been featured on CBS, FOX, NBC network news.

As shoppers mobilize on Thanksgiving, retailers branch out

Nov 23, 2017

NEW YORK — Shoppers are hitting the stores on Thanksgiving and will be finding some surprises: toys and TVs at J.C. Penney, Barbies at Best Buy, kitchen appliances like wine refrigerators at B.J.'s. As the holiday shopping season officially kicked off Thursday, retailers are counting on a lift from a better economy. But they're also looking beyond economic data and mapping out ways to pick up sales from other retailers as Amazon expands its reach. That can mean opening earlier than rivals on the holidays or even jumping into new product categories. The fight for market share comes as analysts...

NEW YORK — The Latest on the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade in New York (all times local): 3:25 p.m. The Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade featured balloons, bands, stars and heavy security in a year marked by attacks on outdoor gathering spots. Both new faces and old favorites were in the lineup at the extravaganza on a cold morning. The parade came less than a month after a truck attack on a bike path near the World Trade Center killed eight people, and police went all-out to ensure the spectacle went off safely. Officers with assault weapons and portable radiation detectors...

Macy's Thanksgiving parade revels on amid tight security

Nov 23, 2017

NEW YORK — The Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade featured balloons, bands, stars and heavy security in a year marked by attacks on outdoor gathering spots. With new faces and old favorites in the lineup, the Americana extravaganza made its way through 2 ½ miles (3.22 kilometers) of Manhattan on a cold morning. "The crowds are still the same, but there's a lot more police here. That's the age we live in," Paul Seyforth said as he attended the parade he'd watched since the 1950s. "Not a lot's changed — the balloons, the bands, the floats — and that's the good...

Smooth sailing so far on $7.5M makeover of Pilgrim ship

Nov 23, 2017

PLYMOUTH, Mass. — If you're a fan of the Mayflower II, here's something that will float your boat. A year after craftsmen embarked on an ambitious effort to restore the rotting replica of the ship that carried the Pilgrims to the New World in 1620, the work "is going really great," project manager Whit Perry says. Britain built the vessel and sailed it to the U.S. as a gift of friendship in 1957. Usually it's moored in Plymouth Harbor, where more than 25 million visitors have boarded it over the past six decades. But over the years, the elements, aquatic...

Russian dancer challenges centuries of ballet tradition

Nov 23, 2017

MOSCOW — It's an uphill battle trying to promote contemporary dance in a country which prides itself on keeping its trademark ballets intact for a century. But acclaimed dancer Diana Vishneva is no stranger to taking risks. Throughout her career on both sides of the Atlantic, Vishneva, a principal dancer at the Mariinsky Theater in St. Petersburg, did not just bask in the accolades for her immaculate performances of Russian ballet classics like Swan Lake or The Sleeping Beauty but also ventured into contemporary dance projects with seemingly little commercial appeal. Her own efforts, originally with another Russian, Alexei Ratmansky,...
