Space capsule with 3 astronauts returns to Earth

Dec 14, 2017

MOSCOW — Three astronauts on Thursday landed back on Earth after nearly six months aboard the International Space Station. A Russian Soyuz capsule with NASA's Randy Bresnik, Russia's Sergey Ryazanskiy and Paolo Nespoli of the European Space Agency descended under a red-and-white parachute and landed on schedule at 2:37 p.m. local time (0837 GMT; 3:37 a.m. EST) on the vast steppes outside of a remote town in Kazakhstan. The three were extracted from the capsule within 20 minutes and appeared to be in good condition. Bresnik, Ryazansky and Nespoli spent 139 days aboard the orbiting space laboratory. The trio who...

Study: Loss of water in drought caused Sierra Nevada to rise

Dec 14, 2017

LOS ANGELES — Loss of water from rocks during drought caused California's Sierra Nevada to rise nearly an inch (2.5 centimeters) in height from October 2011 to October 2015, according to a new NASA study made public Wednesday. The study also found that in the following two years of increased snow and rain, the rocks in the range regained about half as much water as was lost during the drought and the return of the weight caused the height of the mountains to fall about half an inch (1.3 centimeters). "This suggests that the solid Earth has a greater capacity...

'Mannequin Skywalker' rides Blue Origin's new crew capsule

Dec 14, 2017

CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. — Blue Origin's 'Mannequin Skywalker' has rocketed almost all the way to space, just in time for the new Star Wars movie. The aerospace company led by Amazon's Jeff Bezos launched its New Shepard rocket Tuesday from West Texas for the seventh time. It marked the first flight, though, of the latest version of Blue Origin's crew capsule, featuring big windows for future space tourists. An instrumented test dummy was aboard, named Mannequin Skywalker and dressed in a blue — naturally — flight suit. "He had a great ride," Bezos said via Twitter. The New Shepard rocket,...

Monkey selfies, eclipse, bitcoin, Lauer top Google in 2017

Dec 14, 2017

SAN FRANCISCO — Matt Lauer. Bitcoin. DACA. Monkey selfies. Jeremy Lin's hair. Do-it-yourself eclipse glasses. Tom Petty's death. National anthem protests in the NFL. And "Cash Me Outside." These were some of the people, topics and memes that trended to the top of Google searches in 2017. The search terms reflected the United States in upheaval over sexual misconduct allegations against powerful men, reeling from the tumultuous presidency of Donald Trump (What is "covfefe," by the way?), and people around the world searching for information about the latest iPhone and how to make slime. Three of the top 10 TV...

SpaceX delivery delayed few days; 1st reused rocket for NASA

Dec 14, 2017

CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. — SpaceX has delayed its latest grocery run for the International Space Station by at least another few days. The company now aims to launch its first recycled rocket for NASA on Friday. The unmanned Falcon rocket originally flew in June. The Dragon capsule made a space station shipment in 2015. This will be the first launch in more than a year from this Florida pad, the scene of a rocket explosion in 2016. Late Tuesday, SpaceX pushed back the launch for the second day in a row, saying it needs to rid the second-stage fuel system...
