A major controversy has erupted over the future of the century-old Qadeemi Masjid, located inside Delhi's Krishi Bhawan complex, as the Central Government tells the Delhi High Court that the mosque must be removed to facilitate the Central Vista redevelopment project. In its status report, the Centre argued that retaining a permanent religious structure within a government office complex is incompatible with the secular character of government property. The proposed redevelopment involves construction of Common Central Secretariat Buildings 4 and 5 at the site of Krishi Bhawan and Shastri Bhawan. The mosque's caretaking committee has approached the Delhi High Court seeking protection against demolition. It has requested that the mosque be preserved or that an adequate alternative prayer facility be provided nearby. The Centre has also pointed to another mosque near India Gate as an alternative place of worship.During the November 2 hearing, the Delhi High Court questioned whether any rules specifically prohibit providing prayer facilities for a community within government premises. The matter is scheduled for its next hearing on November 23. n18oc_the-5pm-briefn18oc_indiaCNN-News18 is your trusted source for breaking news, updates, and in-depth analysis from around the world.
